A Photo a Week Challenge: Threes and Threes

The Rule of Thirds is an old standard for art and photography aficionados for pretty much ever. You divide the frame into a grid of three across and three down, and then don’t put your subject in the middle square. It’s also best if you can put the focus of your image on one of the grid lines. Just like any really good rule, it’s also fun when you know when to break it. However, for this photo, I didn’t. Not only did I follow the basics of the thirds rule, I also used three lovely rose buds to demonstrate it. You’re welcome.

For anyone who needs it, here’s a grid for reference. If you want to do portrait orientation, just flip it.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Yellow

To me, yellow is the color of warmth. As children, we learn to make the sun in our drawings yellow. Fire is usually depicted with yellow flames. These small, delicate flowers were growing along the driveway of our family cabin, and even though very small, they were a wonderful burst of color and warmth. I’ve seen these flowers my whole life. We used to pick them and rub the small tuft against our skins, much like a yellow dandelion head. Small, yellow flowers will always remind me of the Utah mountains.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Flower

Yesterday was the first day of summer, and we’ve been enjoying spring so much. This spring has been especially amazing for our roses. We have several bushes, and they have all produced amazing blossoms. My favorite is our yellow rose bush. We almost lost it a few years ago during a very harsh winter, but I’m happy to report that it has roar back wonderfully.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Through Glass

I seem to fancy photos involving glass this time each year. Last week, my mother, sister, and I bottled what we call chow chow (also known as mustard pickles). I don’t know how it got the name chow chow, but that’s what my grandmother called it. I love the tangy taste of the mustard sauce on all of the other ingredients, which include cucumbers, pearl onions, and cauliflower. When I was a kid, I wondered why my mom and grandmother only used pints for bottling them. I don’t wonder anymore. Cutting up the veggies and pealing those tiny onions for 23 pints was enough to make me look crosseyed and vow to not do this again for another two years, but they sure look pretty through the glass of the jars.

A Photo a Week Challenge: From Below

One of the stops we made on our river cruise was Melk, Austria to visit the beautiful Melk Abbey. The abbey stands on the top of a hill and includes a school and an amazing library, and is one of the most striking sites along the Danube. As we found out, almost every historic building in Europe has scaffolding on it all of the time. At least it’s much less noticeable from below than it is from the courtyard were the second and third photos were taken. This arch is the one you can see on the first photo right in the center.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Yellow

The yellow hibiscus is Hawaii’s state flower. It is native to the islands and grows wild as well as cultivated. We saw these beautifully-kept hibiscus at the LDS Laie Hawaii Temple. Yellow is a bright, cheerful color that always makes me smile. It was my father’s favorite color, and I think of him whenever I see it. Yesterday would have been his 86 birthday, so Happy Birthday, Papa. I miss you.
