A Photo a Week Challenge: Street Lights

In my travels, I have noticed that evening and night street lighting is part of the unique experience for each location I visit. Even within a city, the type of lighting used at night changes depending on the area. Time Square in New York is almost as bright at night as it is during the day, just a different kind of bright. Residential parts of Chicago use softer, less noticeable street lamps. A small village in Scotland might not have any lighting at night except what is in the sky. This lamp is on the Chain Bridge in Budapest, Hungary. The lamps line the bridge on both sides and help provide the beautiful illumination the city is famous for.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Music

In most countries, culture is infused with music. It is part of history as well as current events. Like other art forms, music not only tells the story of an era, but also helps to shape it. During times of war and conflict, popular music becomes more nationalistic and patriotic. During the Great Depression, popular music not only lifted people up, but also spoke of the struggles of many. When a place is experiencing peace and prosperity, popular music is usually more bubbly and lively. One thing that popular music has always done is shock the older generations. My parents didn’t like our music. Their parents didn’t like their music. And on back throughout the centuries. Johann Sebastian Bach (ah, Bach) was an underpaid, little-recognized chapelmeister in Leipzig, Germany for the majority of his professional career. His music wasn’t “discovered” until Felix Mendelssohn conducted a performance of the Saint Matthew Passion in 1829 (it was the first performance since Bach’s death in 1750).

On our recent trip to Europe, we caught this fun, live band in Regensburg, Germany on Corpus Christi Day at a Biergarten. The food was amazing, and the band was even better.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Quintessential

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, quintessential means perfectly typical or representative of a particular kind of person or thing. To me, nothing is more quintessential for the Nederlands and Holland in particular than windmills. During our trip to Europe, we made a stop at Kinderdjik to see the still operating windmills that help to keep the waters at bay for the area. Like most things that are arbitrary, what makes something quintessential is completely in the eye of the beholder. For me, the windmills are quintessentially Dutch, but for someone else it might be a tulip field or a fjord. So look around and find things that show the essence of, well, whatever.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Light the Night

It’s been a while since I did a night shot challenge. We recent had the chance to visit Budapest, Hungary. One evening, we strolled from Castle Hill down to the banks of the Danube River looking for great night shots of the beautifully illuminated buildings and structures of the city. The first photo is the famous Parliament Building from the banks of the Danube. The second photo is the Chain Bridge taken close to where we took the picture of the Parliament Building, just swinging the camera down the river instead of up. The third photo is the Matthias Church on Castle Hill. The last photo is the Parliament Building from the Fisherman’s Bastion. I highly recommend visiting Budapest. Wonderful food, amazing sites, and fun adventures (the Széchenyi Medicinal Bath was a blast!) await the adventurous soul.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Opening

I love using arches, doors, and windows to frame images. Using an opening as a frame can create interest and a unique way to see something you’ve looked at a million different times. It can also invite the viewer to want to explore more, to see more. This image is looking at the Matthias Church in Budapest Hungary from an arch in the Fisherman’s Bastion. I love this glimpse of the church’s beautiful tile roof and windows. I also love the detail in the stonework of the archway.
