Even though winter is still two weeks away–officially–we are experiencing cold temperatures and the occasional bout of snow and ice. Here’s a nice dramatic icicle for your viewing pleasure. Of course, ice doesn’t just mean cold, frozen water. Have a lot of fun this week seeing what you can find for ice, ice, baby.

Thankful November 14th: Flowers

I love flowers. I love smelling flowers. I love looking at flowers. And I especially love photographing flowers. My maternal grandmother had the most amazing flower garden: roses, lilies, snapdragons, daisies. Each summer, her small yard was transformed by colors and scents that transported us to a fairy world.

A Photo a Week Challenge: State of Confusion

Spring in Utah is like living in a state of confusion. Each year, the fruit farmers live in constant dread of late spring snowstorms and hard freezes that could wipe out their entire crop. The day after my tulips opened, we had a crazy snowstorm that blanketed our garden with about an inch of snow. Fortunately, the next day the temperature was in the 50s and the snow melted. At least we don’t have to water the gardens yet.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Your Weather Today

Sorry about missing last week, but there are times when you just have to take a week off. This week is all about the weather where you live. In Utah, we’ve had a crazy bit of weather for the last month. January and most of February were horrible if you like to ski or own a ski resort. Then on Sunday night, a massive snow storm moved in. We shoveled the driveway three times in 24 hours. Once the storms move out, we got beautiful blue skies. And the snow-capped mountains against the blue sky is stunning.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Clouds

Yesterday and this morning, while other places in the country were able to get good shots of the super blue moon and lunar eclipse, here in the Salt Lake Valley, we had clouds. Beautiful clouds, but still clouds that made it hard to impossible to get good photos of the moon. (We’ll just have to wait until 2037.) But it’s okay. I love photographing clouds.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Off the Beaten Track

In the 1950s, my grandfather built a cabin in the National Forest deep in the Uinta Mountains. It’s been in our family ever since. To get there, you have to get to the small, mountain town of Kamas, Utah. From there, you take the Mirror Lake Highway (a scenic byway between Kamas, Utah and Evanston, Wyoming). About half way between mile markers 14 and 15 is the Soapstone Basin turn off. After you cross the Provo River, the paved road becomes a well-kept dirt road. When you come to the first fork, you go to the right to get to the “gated” community of the Soapstone Summer Homes. Don’t let the grand name fool you; only a handful of the cabins here (most built between 1940 and 1970) could pass for a luxury get-away home. We finally had ours wired for electricity in 1999. This photo is the hill just before the last turn before you get to our property. We don’t own the land (that belongs to the National Forest), just the building and contents. But the scenery is spectacular.
