Seniors and Missionary shoot with Master B

This great young man is graduating from high school and getting ready to leave for an LDS mission to California this summer. He’s very busy, so it was great to be able to give him a bit of a break from studying for AP tests and finals to do a fun, relaxing photo shoot. He was such a natural in front of the camera.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Saturation

saturation1_nmp saturation2_nmp saturation3_nmp

sat·u·ra·tion (saCHəˈrāSH(ə)n/) noun
the state or process that occurs when no more of something can be absorbed, combined with, or added.

I don’t know about you, but I love playing around with saturation. Over-saturation can take your image from the normal to the unreal. Under-saturated images can create the feeling of nostalgia or, when combined with heightened sharpness, a gritty, urbanized texture. Whether you prefer one over the other or like your images to have a more realistic, at the moment feel, saturation is an important tool to have in your post-processing arsenal of abilities. Have fun this week playing around with levels of saturation. In your post, include before, middle, and after photos.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE PHOTOS WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SATURATION.

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Each week, I’ll come up with a theme and post a photo that I think fits. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Thursday, when the next photo theme will be announced.
  2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “A Photo a Week Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ and “Photo a Week” tags.
  3. Come back here and post a link to your image in the comments for this challenge.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Rule of Thirds

Rule of thirds

The rule of thirds is a standard photographers use to frame their images. You divide the frame into a grid of three across and three down, and then don’t put your subject in the middle square. Just like any really good rule, it’s also fun when you know when to break it. However, for this photo, I didn’t.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Love of a parent

Baby O and Mommy

I think my favorite type of portrait photography is taking almost candid shots of parents with their children. You can feel love in every look and touch. And there is not much that’s as sweet as a mother with her newborn baby. I had the opportunity to take newborn photos of Baby O and also snagged a couple of pictures of him with his lovely mama before the “official” shoot started. You can sense the care and gentle love in her hand as she cradles his head. And how sweet is her slight smile as she rocks her baby?

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO OR TWO THAT DEPICTS THE LOVE OF A PARENT FOR A CHILD.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Up Close and Personal

up_close_nmpLast week’s challenge was about profiles. This week, it’s about getting up close and personal with your subject. Close ups are fun and challenging, whether you’re shooting a person or a flower. It’s important to make sure you are focusing on what you want to have in focus (sometimes a challenge when you are used to using auto-focus). It’s also important to pay attention to lighting. My subject was back-lit, so I forced a subdued flash to fill in.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO OR TWO OF CLOSE UPS (HUMAN OR NOT).

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

A Photo a Week challenge: Profile

Baby R at 1

I have a confession to make. I enjoy profiles more than standard portraits. I know that sounds a little off for someone trying to build a business as a portrait/wedding photographer, but it’s true. I think you get some of the most interesting expressions when your subject isn’t looking at the camera. Sometimes you capture a pensive look, sometimes something more mischievous.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO OR TWO THAT INCLUDE AT LEAST ONE SUBJECT IN PROFILE.

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Here’s how it works:

J Bridals Teaser

In late September, I had the chance to do the engagement photos our niece and her fiance. Last week, we headed to Memory Grove and the Utah State Capitol Building for the bridals. I’m only posting one right now, so that she gets the honor of revealing her dress and over-all look the day of the wedding. We were lucky enough to catch a beautiful, late afternoon late October day for the shoot. I’m excited to share more after the wedding, but here’s a teaser. She really does have the prettiest eyes and smile.

A Word a Week Challenge: Technology

technology_wpNot a super high-level technology, but one that sure comes in handy during a photo shoot. I love that my husband is willing to do crazy things (like lie on the ground and position a reflector just perfectly) so that I can get the shot I want. Just in case you’re wondering how it worked, here’s the result.
