A Photo a Week Challenge: Quintessential

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, quintessential means perfectly typical or representative of a particular kind of person or thing. To me, nothing is more quintessential for the Nederlands and Holland in particular than windmills. During our trip to Europe, we made a stop at Kinderdjik to see the still operating windmills that help to keep the waters at bay for the area. Like most things that are arbitrary, what makes something quintessential is completely in the eye of the beholder. For me, the windmills are quintessentially Dutch, but for someone else it might be a tulip field or a fjord. So look around and find things that show the essence of, well, whatever.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Halloween

In honor of Halloween next Tuesday, this week is all about the spooks, scares, and traditions of this holiday. My husband and I like carving pumpkins. This year, he found the biggest pumpkin I have ever owned. It weighs over 50 pounds. I doubt it will be vandalized because the kids in our neighborhood who are into that sort of things are really wimpy. I’ve also baked cookies and two weeks ago we bought the Costco-sized bag of chocolate to give out. We will stay in that night and watch The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, a spoof of the 50s and 60s B horror/SciFi movies. Wonderfully campy and horrible dialogue. What are your Halloween traditions?

A Photo a Week Challenge: Green

Our world is full of colors, but especially the color green. And aren’t we lucky? Green happens to be my favorite color, from bright lime green to a green so dark it looks black. To me, green is the color of life and spring. I love watching plants as they begin to grow and shoot up one or two green stems into the sunlight. I love watching our lawn change from winter brown to spring and summer green. Even the spring air smells green to me. And it makes me happy.
