A Photo a Week Challenge: Motion

MotionMotion can be tricky to capture. If your shutter is set too high, the image looks stopped. If the shutter is too low, too much can be blurred. I was lucky enough to grab this shot at a high school production of A Christmas Carol. With no flash allowed, the action blurred beautifully with my 50mm lens and an F-stop of f/1.8.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS WHAT WINTER IS FOR YOU.

Experiment with motion in your photos and see what works best for what you want to capture. Then post it to your blog and share the link here. If you have pointers and suggestions for other photographers, please share them as well.

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Here’s how it works:

1. Each week, I’ll come up with a theme and post a photo that I think fits. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Thursday, when the next photo theme will be announced.

2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “A Photo a Week Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.

3. Follow nancy merrill photography so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Winter chill

Snowy tree

On Tuesday, Salt Lake City was hit with the first big snowstorm of the season. We received about three inches of fresh powder in the valley, and the ski resorts are bursting with joy over the dump in the mountains. Here, it takes a fall of at least 1-1/2 feet before the city shuts down, so it was a bit dicey getting home.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS WHAT WINTER IS FOR YOU.

So, what does winter chill feel like to you? I know that some readers are gearing up for summer and thoughts of winter are probably the last thing on your mind. And others never see a flake of snow all year. Get creative. Have fun with it. If your “winter” consists of a slight dip in the temperature, think kindly on us poor souls who will be buried under mounds of the white stuff for the next six months.

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

(Yes, I stole these rules from The Daily Post Photo Challenge. I hope they don’t mind.)

A Photo a Week: Changing Seasons

Changing seasonsWe’ve been very lucky this year in Utah. We’ve had a beautiful fall season. Usually, fall around here lasts about 3 days and is a muted brown. However, this year we’ve had a full spectrum of colors around the Salt Lake Valley and in the mountains. Soon, the snow will start flying, and we’ll have to wait until mid March or early April for signs of spring.

Post your favorite photo that represents a change of season (any season) and put the link in the comments here to share. Tag your post with “photo challenge” and “postaday” so that others can find it easily.

A Photo a Week: Butter Yellow

When I hear the words “butter yellow”, I think of roses. My grandmother grew the most amazing roses of all colors, but her yellow roses were stunning. My husband also wooed me with yellow roses from what is now our rose garden.

A Photo a Week: Blurry

For this inaugural photo challenge, the topic is blurry. Have you ever taken a photo that turned out to be blurry and you were okay with it? Have you ever purposefully taken a blurry photo for the artistry of it? What about one where what you initially thought you wanted in focus wasn’t, but it made the shot more interesting?

I took this photo of my stepdaughter as she was walking ahead of me. I had on a narrow focal 50mm lens, and she was walking so fast that she was out of focus as soon as the camera focused and was ready to snap the picture. But I was okay with it because I like the effect.

Blurry

Post your blurry shots and link them to this post. Then come back and share the link. I’m excited to see what everyone (or anyone) comes up with!
