A Photo a Week Challenge: Playtime

I had the opportunity to do an extended family photo shoot, and these adorable cousins were having so much fun together. Even though they see each other often, they were so excited when they got together, and their enthusiasm made the whole shoot go off splendidly, even with the chilly weather. Big kudos to their parents and grandparents, who let them be kids and have moments like this, even if some might think they are wasting time (they weren’t, because I loved taking this photo).

A Photo a Week Challenge: Mothers

with Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, I wanted to dedicate this challenge to the mothers in our lives. This wonderful mother is my niece and her daughter. My niece is hard-working, loves her kids (she has three boys and this one uber-adorable girl), and adores her husband (who adores her back). I also have two amazing mothers: my mom and my husband’s mom. I hope all mothers have a wonderful Mother’s Day with pampering and love and joy.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Unexpected Focus

As photographers, we try to be very careful about how, where, and what we focus on. We can spend large amounts of time getting the focus just right for an image. Then, there are the fun happenstances where what we thought we were focusing on isn’t what the camera thought we wanted to focus on. For this image, I focused on the foreground tree on purpose as my subject walked towards me along the pond’s edge. I loved the delicate blossoms on the tree, and I also loved how it gave her a feeling of privacy.

A Photo a Week Challenge: All About the Scenery

I am very lucky to live near beautiful, diverse landscapes and scenery. This amazing “forest” is in my sister’s back yard, and she amazingly allows me to come over with people she knows (and sometimes people she doesn’t know) to take their pictures amongst her trees and rocks and foliage. Granted, the young man posing so nicely by the large tree isn’t bad to look at, either.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Off-Center

One of the cardinal rules of photography is to not place your main subject in the middle of your frame. It’s all part of that asymmetry stuff that you learned in high school art classes. If you’ve found a photo with a dead-centered subject that you love, but it doesn’t look quite right, try cropping it with your subject off-centered and see if you like it more. The beauty with digital is that you can try several different ways to see what looks the best and even ask family, friends, or perfect strangers which they like the most.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Working with Animals

I enjoy theater. I enjoy being on stage and acting in a play or musical. It’s a lot of fun. As an actor, you are always warned to not work with children or animals, because no matter how good you are, how compelling your character is, how well you sing, all anyone will focus on is the child or critter. Of course, they are also a blast to work with and photograph. This young man loves his dogs, and asked if we could include them in his senior photo shoot. With such a ham (the white dog, in case you couldn’t tell), how could I say no?

A Photo a Week Challenge: Laughter

Last week, the challenge was joy. This week, it’s laughter. As this year is heading to a close, I plan on keeping with uplighting themes for the challenges. I think considering how this year has gone, we could all use it. This is my niece and her youngest child. We had so much fun with their family photo shoot, and at the end, my niece asked me to get some intimate shots with just her and her baby. You can feel the love and happiness.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Joy

I know this photo isn’t in focus. This awesome dad of identical twin girls was having fun running around with them, and as you can see from their faces, the girls were having even more fun. These little sweeties were so much fun to photograph. And even though I have some great portrait-quality photos, this is the one that makes me smile the most. They love their dad, and he loves them to the moon and back. Not only are they showing so much joy, but I had a lot joy sharing this time with them.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Feet

At the photo shoot for this adorable family, the mom asked me to take a photo of the bare feet of her three boys. This is how they spend the majority of their days, running around inside and out with no shoes on. The oldest boy even wore flip-flops for the shoot because he doesn’t like shoes.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Masks

This theme seemed to be appropriate on many levels. With Halloween just a couple of weeks away, it will be interesting to see how people morph their covid-19 masks into their costumes. When doing senior photos, I ask people to bring things that they enjoy and have interests in. This is my nephew, who had a lot of fun posing for me with his plague doctor mask. Also, considering what is happening in the world right now, this mask may be a little too close to necessary than we all would like to admit.
