A Photo a Week Challenge: Natural Lighting

I love not having to set up lighting. Flash stands and additional lighting is the bane of my photography existence. I love, love, LOVE natural lighting. I love shooting outdoors because I usually don’t have to worry too much about lighting (golden hour is ideal). I grabbed this photo of my sister-in-law at our family cabin one morning last summer when the lighting coming in the kitchen window was just perfect.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Motion

I know I haven’t announced it, but I’ve made the decision to move the challenge from Thursday to Monday. Time on the weekends is easier for me to manage than during the week. So here’s the first Monday challenge: Motion.

I had the opportunity to take pictures during the dress rehearsal of the Myriad Dance Company’s show Catalyst this last week. Our son designed their lighting (yes, he is rather fantastic), and the company was thrilled to get some professional photos for their own use. All of the dancers were amazing, but my subject’s hair on this shot defied gravity.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Shimmer

It is so much fun to play with light, especially natural light. When shooting outdoors, the sun can be your best friend or your worst enemy. I love taking photos of the sun and water. This shot was take at Silver Lake at Brighton Sky Resort. It’s a popular location for photo shoots. The walk around the lake is easy (unless there’s a lot of snow and ice on the trail), and there are many places to get great shots with either the lake or the trees as a great backdrop. I was trying out a potential lens (I did end up buying it), and was really happy with the results, especially of the sun shining on the lake.

A Photo a Week Challenge: By Firelight

Growing up, Christmas always included Christmas trees next to wood-burning fires, multi-colored tree lights and the smell of baking cookies. Our current house does not have a fireplace, so I have to find my firelight shots at other times of the year. This one is from our church young women’s camp this summer.

Firelight can be fun to photograph, but you have to account for so much with lighting: too much warmth from the fire, creating good exposure for any subjects in the photo. Post-processing software is great for getting just the right warmth (or coolness) in your image. I used Photoshop to get this one to look how I wanted.

2017 Trevor Carpenter PhotoChallenge Week 45: Clear glass with no reflection

A few weeks ago I posted my entry for a new photo challenge I had found. Since then, the challenge has changed names and website addresses. I haven’t missed a week of posting on Facebook, but I haven’t been posting here. I hope to make this a more permanent thing and remember to post here every week as well. So, here’s my entry for this week. The challenge was to take a picture of clear glass with no reflection. My sister gave me this cute glass candy basket.

So my set up was very, very basic. My kitchen table, the light from the window, and a plain, white tea towel to cover the box that made it high enough for better lighting. Not perfect, but very fun.

A Photo a Week: Under Glass

Salt Lake City is home to an amazing French bakery appropriately named Gourmandise The Bakery. I went in after a fun afternoon of shooting pictures around the city and Temple Square, and I couldn’t resist taking some pictures of the pastry offerings on display in the glass cases.

Shooting pictures through glass can be a tricky business. You have to account for any glare from artificial and natural lighting. You also have to make sure that your camera is focusing on the item behind the glass and not the glass itself. And you have to make the proper adjustments (either in the camera or later in processing) for any color aberrations that can happen because of the previous two things. But it can also give you some amazing images.

Anyone who knows me well knows my love of fresh fruit, especially berries. Actually, I’m a great lover of food. I think there’s a good chance that without food, I would die. Literally. Food has been the subject of art for centuries. Young art students and grand masters alike have painted and sketched thousands of still lifes of bowls upon bowls of fruit. Photographers are no different. We carefully place each tasty item, make sure the lighting is decent, and snap away. Food is life, in healthy bodies and in art.
