A Photo a Week Challenge: Light and Dark

During times like this, is can seem as though there is no light. I believe that we need opposition in all things. Without bitter, we can’t savor sweetness. Without pain, we can’t comprehend bliss. Without dark, we can’t understand light. Contrast in art is important to help create substance and focus. We smoked some corn on the cob on our Traeger, and I loved how the husks turned out. I put them in a stock pot on my stove to capture this image. I don’t know what I enjoyed more: photographing or eating them. (Just kidding. They tasted amazing!)

A Photo a Week Challenge: Footwear

I like wearing shoes, but I don’t like buying shoes and I don’t own a lot of them. When I find a style that I like and are comfortable, I will wear them until they wear out. Then, I’ll try to replace them with the exact same shoes. I love shoes for little kids. I think they are so cute, especially boots. Any style of boot for a little kid is just adorable. These boots belong to my great-niece. Her parents are building a new house, and these are the boots that she wears around the construction site.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Neglected

My husband has some of the most fun job sites. One of our best clients (and a good friend of my husband) is building a small, forest get-away in the Uinta Mountains. He had some questions for his structural engineer, so of course we had to go for a visit. Along with taking pictures of the construction site, I had time to sit and take some more artistic shots, like this one of an old can of, wow, I’m not even sure what is in that can. The bristles of the brush were completely hardened, and you can no longer read the label.

For the curious, here are pictures of the cabin construction site and a view from the top of the mountain that is part of the property.

Anyone who knows me well knows my love of fresh fruit, especially berries. Actually, I’m a great lover of food. I think there’s a good chance that without food, I would die. Literally. Food has been the subject of art for centuries. Young art students and grand masters alike have painted and sketched thousands of still lifes of bowls upon bowls of fruit. Photographers are no different. We carefully place each tasty item, make sure the lighting is decent, and snap away. Food is life, in healthy bodies and in art.

I love glass bottles. I love how they feel in my hands. I love how they photograph. Glass provides so many interesting opportunities for images. This week, just go hog wild with your creativity using glass! (P.S. The Mountain Town Olive Oil Co. has amazing oils and balsamic vinegars. We love their products.)

A Photo a Week Challenge: Open

Usually, when a photo challenge has a topic of open, it means to post anything you want. However, this challenge is literally open: open cases, open doors, open cans, open anything. Last year, my husband and I had the opportunity to sing with the Utah Symphony Chorus. The night of one performance, I brought my camera to take some fun pictures around the Green Room (where performers wait to go on stage). This one of an open violin case is a particular favorite of mine.
