A Photo a Week Challenge: State of Confusion

Spring in Utah is like living in a state of confusion. Each year, the fruit farmers live in constant dread of late spring snowstorms and hard freezes that could wipe out their entire crop. The day after my tulips opened, we had a crazy snowstorm that blanketed our garden with about an inch of snow. Fortunately, the next day the temperature was in the 50s and the snow melted. At least we don’t have to water the gardens yet.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Extravagance

When King Ludwig II of Bavaria inherited the throne in 1864, Bavaria was no longer an imperial monarchy, but was now a constitutional monarchy where the king had very little power. In spite of this restraint (or possibly because of it), Ludwig ignored the needs of his country and spent all of his time and most of the national coffers on building elaborate and beautifully fanciful castles. The only one that was completed before he died in 1886 (under very mysterious circumstances) was Linderhof Castle. It’s a miniature remake of the Palace at Versailles in France, including many similar rooms and extended gardens. Pictures of the inside of the castle is not aloud, but you can image how ornate and extravagant it is by looking at the exterior (and yes, that is a gold-leafed statue in the middle of the pool).

A Photo a Week Challenge: Red

It’s another color challenge! We love color challenges. I do love color challenges, because they allow a lot more freedom. Red has become one of my favorite colors. My closet is full of various shades of reds. I think it’s because red goes so well with my first favorite color, green. When photographing red, it can be tricky to make sure the color doesn’t take over too much. It can also shade the rest of the image, depending on the lighting. Good luck, photogbugs! Have fun with the color red.

A Photo a Week Challenge: One

Three Dog Night sang “One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do,” but sometimes one is the best number for creating a memorable photo. This photo is of my niece walking through the gardens at Schloss Brig in Brig, Switzerland. She wasn’t really alone (obviously because I’m taking a picture of her), but she enjoyed wandering off by herself for a bit to take in the beauty of her surroundings (and to get away from her travel buddies for a little while — who doesn’t need that every now and then on a two-week trip?). I love the reflective and peaceful look on her face.
