When I found my husband, I really hit the jackpot. I was in my early 40s. I had never been married and had reached the point where I was fine with that. Funny how life has other plans for us sometimes. We met doing a play at a local community theater. I was the music director, he was a bass in the chorus with a small speaking part, and when the show was over, I took him home and kept him. That was almost 12 years ago, and I now can’t imagine my life without him. And while he is the first one to admit that he isn’t perfect, he is perfect for me.

I have been lucky enough to do a bit of traveling around this amazing planet on which we live (that sentence structure is a nod to all of my English professors at the University of Utah). I’ve been to Asia, Europe, Mexico, Great Britain, and most of the United States of America. Everywhere I go, I find beautiful things to photograph and wonderful people who fill my heart with happiness.

Sorry for the very late posting for this challenge, but it’s been one of those weeks. In fact, I’m cheating just a little. This week’s challenge is for you to pick any photo you choose, just please tell us why you chose that photo. This photo is one I took this last summer up at our family cabin. One of our daughters loves For-Get-Me-Nots. I knew that they grew near the cabin, so I went in search and found these lovely blooms. Very small and delicate, but worth the hunt.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Changing Seasons
Monday was officially the first day of fall here in the northern hemisphere. We’ve had an interesting spring and summer in Utah. We started with a lot of rain in June, followed by almost no rain in July, and then a bit of a mixed bag in August. September has been undecided in its weather loyalties, going from highs in the upper 90s in Salt Lake City, to barely cracking the low 60s. We have a saying (that is probably common to 90% of the world): “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change.”
We are now in my favorite time of year. I love everything about fall. I love the changing leaves, the crisp feeling of a chill in the air, every holiday between now and New Years, and even a bit of snow.
Whether you are going from summer to fall or winter to spring, the changing of the seasons reminds us of the beauty of this amazing world we live in.

My husband and I like to take excursions into the mountains that surround the Salt Lake Valley. It is amazing to view the power of nature. We came across this tree that had been twisted by the snow pack. It is a testament to the forces around us.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Beauty
One of the places we wanted to visit while in Scotland is called the Queen’s View. When Queen Victoria visited it in the 1800s, legend has it that she believed it was named for her, but in reality, Robert the Bruce called it that because it was the favorite view of his wife, Queen Margaret. With the recent tragedy in Paris, I wanted this week’s challenge to be one of hope and beauty. Beauty can be found everywhere, even in tragedy. The image below is the ruins Melrose Abbey, where Robert the Bruce’s heart is believed to be buried. The Abbey was built in the 1100s, and after many assaults and wars, fell into disuse and ruin in the late 1500s.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Shimmer
It is so much fun to play with light, especially natural light. When shooting outdoors, the sun can be your best friend or your worst enemy. I love taking photos of the sun and water. This shot was take at Silver Lake at Brighton Sky Resort. It’s a popular location for photo shoots. The walk around the lake is easy (unless there’s a lot of snow and ice on the trail), and there are many places to get great shots with either the lake or the trees as a great backdrop. I was trying out a potential lens (I did end up buying it), and was really happy with the results, especially of the sun shining on the lake.

And even though I’ve been know to make a few memes myself, I’m usually more interested in the photo than the words. What made them choose that photo? A Photo a Week Challenge: The Great Outdoors
Living in Utah, I’m surrounded by amazing nature. It is less than 30 minutes to several major sky resorts. The Rocky and Uinta Mountain Ranges dominate the landscape in northern Utah, and the amazing red rock landscape of southern Utah make it one of the most diverse places to visit. In September, we to a short hike up one of the local canyons to these amazing ruins. We’re not sure what this building was or why it was built, but it was a lot of fun to get to and roam around.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Reflection
I usually save my reflection challenge for the end of the year, but I couldn’t wait to share this photo. I was playing around with (meaning, we rented it from our local photography expert store) the amazing Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens up at Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon, and I have to admit that I’m really excited to get my own next week. This couple were sharing a quick embrace at a popular portrait location when I grabbed this shot from across the lake. When I was processing the files, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the images and also the beautiful reflection in this particular one.
