A Photo a Week Challenge: Focal Point

As a photographer, I take great care about what is in focus in my photos. Changing the focal point of an image can change the entire feel of the photo. In the images I’ve shared for today’s challenge, I’ve taken the same picture but changed the focus of the image. I love each image for different reasons.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Unexpected Focus

As  photographers, we try to be very careful about how, where, and what we focus on. We can spend large amounts of time getting the focus just right for an image. Then, there are the fun happenstances where what we thought we were focusing on isn’t what the camera thought we wanted to focus on. For this image, I focused on the foreground tree on purpose as my subject walked towards me along the pond’s edge. I loved the delicate blossoms on the tree, and I also loved how it gave her a feeling of privacy.

A Photo a Week Challenge: A Different Focus

As  photographers, we try to be very careful about how, where, and what we focus on. We can spend large amounts of time getting the focus just right for an image. This image is from a recent bridal shoot where I purposefully focused on something other than the beautiful bride and her handsome groom, hoping for a feeling of intimacy and a bit of privacy for them.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Soft

Most photographers work hard to make sure that every shot is perfectly in focus. We love seeing every little detail pop from an image. For some shots, a softer, almost blurry feeling works better. It all depends on what ambiance you are trying to create. For this image, I didn’t do anything to the sharpness (or lack thereof) in the post-processing. I thought, given the intimate moment, that a softer feeling worked just great.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Focus

focalpoint2 Focus challenge #1This week’s challenge is about focal points and perspective. I used two different lenses to create the different focus types. The top one is with a standard 18mm-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G (at 18mm wide angle) kit lens. The bottom one is with a 50mm 1:1.8G lens.
