A Photo a Week Challenge: Dads and Daughters

Our youngest daughter moved to Chicago a couple of years ago after graduating from college. While we miss having her and her husband close by, we love visiting them. I also love watching my husband interact with his children, especially now that they are adults building their own lives. Halie and Russell share a unique sense of humor and a love of performing (onstage and off). When they are together, you can feel their deep connection and love for each other. She took us to Wrigley Field just so we could get a picture of Russell to show off to his business partner who loves the Cubs but hasn’t been to Chicago.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Square

Most cameras take pictures in a 6″x4″ format. I like playing around with canvas sizes, especially using a square format. I found this wonderful glass brick window in an older apartment building while walking around the Roger’s Park area of Northern Chicago. With all of the uniform square bricks, I thought it would be fun to crop it to a square.

This week, the subject of your photo is up to you, but please crop your image into a square.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Signs

A couple of weekends ago, we headed to Chicago to visit our daughter and son-in-law. We had mild weather, which made it possible to visit some really fun places in the Windy City. One of the most fun places was the Billy Goat Tavern, made famous in the Saturday Night Live Olympian Restaurant skit. Of course we had to get a picture of the sign. Signs are wonderful subjects for photos. They are as varied as the human imagination.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Mass Transit

While waiting for our “L” train in Evanston, Illinois, I grabbed the first photo of a train heading the other way. The second photo I snagged covertly during our train ride. Mass transit is a major part of so many people’s lives, whether it’s how you get to work or just around the city where you live. In Utah, mass transit includes buses and light-rail trains. The trains have been around for just the last 10 years or so, but they are a fun way to get around the city without having to fight traffic or look for a place to park.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Reflective Surfaces

The bottom of The Bean

A visit to Chicago isn’t complete without seeing the Cloud Gate, nicknamed The Bean, at Millennium Park. Even though Boston, Massachusetts is technically bean town, Chicagoans are very proud of this amazing sculpture, created by Anish Kapoor. People crowd around the Cloud Gate to take selfies of their reflection. We also found the underside fascinating. This photo was taken looking up at the center from underneath the arch.
