A Photo a Week: Gateways

A couple of months ago, I posted a challenge for fences and gates. This week is similar but with a slightly different focus. By definition, a gateway is any passage by or point at which a region may be entered. Port cities are frequently referred to as gateways. This very picturesque gateway is in Switzerland and led from a castle courtyard into a beautiful, forested area surrounding the castle. It was almost like a fairy portal. And let’s be honest: I love any type of perspective shot with a vanishing point.

Thankful November 21st: My Heritage

I have a very diverse heritage. English, Irish, Danish, Swiss, Italian, Jewish, Spanish, French, Scottish. And we don’t know if that’s all. One of the biggest influences on my life was my mother’s mother, whose parents immigrated to the United States from Switzerland in the 1880s. I had promised my mom that I would make sure she got to Switzerland in her lifetime, and we took that trip in the summer of 2016. It really was a once-in-a-lifetime trip for my mother, who was 83 at the time. She will probably never get back to Switzerland because of her health, but she will always remember that trip.

Thankful November 18th: Traveling

I know that I’ve already expressed gratitude for the earth and its beauties, but I am also very grateful for the chance I’ve had (and continue to have) to travel many places around the world and also close to home. When my husband and I got married, he hadn’t traveled much. A couple of years after we married, I convinced him that we needed to take a trip to Great Britain to visit a nephew who had been transferred to London for a year, along with his wife and three boys. It was the best thing that could have happened to us. Since then, we have made a few more trips across the pond to the east, across the pond to the west, and headed down south for my first experience in Mexico (besides Tijuana). I’m looking forward to many more adventures around this amazing globe we live on in the near and distant future.

I have been lucky enough to do a bit of traveling around this amazing planet on which we live (that sentence structure is a nod to all of my English professors at the University of Utah). I’ve been to Asia, Europe, Mexico, Great Britain, and most of the United States of America. Everywhere I go, I find beautiful things to photograph and wonderful people who fill my heart with happiness.

A Photo a Week Challenge: View

As photographers, we get the chance to take a lot of pictures of many things: scenery, family, scenery, buildings, scenery, pets, scenery. You get the picture (pun intended). I can’t think of anywhere that I’ve ever been where I thought “Wow, I never want to take a picture of THIS place.” And I’m really glad about that. The world around us is amazing. Every place has it’s own type of beauty. These pictures are from our trip last summer to Europe. The top one is looking through a convenient “National Geographic” frame at the windmills at Kinderdijk in The Nederlands. The pictures below are from stops in Germany along the Main and Rhine Rivers. So this week’s challenge is to find the beauty in your view, whether it’s just outside your kitchen window or from a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Smile

Smile and the world smiles with you. As photographers, we are constantly trying to find that perfect smile. One that doesn’t look forced or phony. One that will make our client/subject smile that way again when they look at their photo. My husband has my favorite smile. It also helps that he isn’t afraid to do things that might look foolish. He is also a consummate photo bomber, so he’s wonderful, silly-but-oh-so-genuine smile has graced the photos of many of the unsuspecting people in his life (and the not-so-occasional stranger).

Cee’s Black & White Challenge: Things That Fly

Swans are ubiquitous in Switzerland and southern Germany. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are both named for the beautiful birds. Although they can fly, swans are more well-known for their beauty and grace in the water. The first picture is at Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. The fountain is at Hohenschwangau in Germany.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Extravagance

When King Ludwig II of Bavaria inherited the throne in 1864, Bavaria was no longer an imperial monarchy, but was now a constitutional monarchy where the king had very little power. In spite of this restraint (or possibly because of it), Ludwig ignored the needs of his country and spent all of his time and most of the national coffers on building elaborate and beautifully fanciful castles. The only one that was completed before he died in 1886 (under very mysterious circumstances) was Linderhof Castle. It’s a miniature remake of the Palace at Versailles in France, including many similar rooms and extended gardens. Pictures of the inside of the castle is not aloud, but you can image how ornate and extravagant it is by looking at the exterior (and yes, that is a gold-leafed statue in the middle of the pool).

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dense

If you look close (or maybe not so closely) at the top of the very dense forest, you can see the tower of the Ehrenberg Castle ruin. Below is a picture of the full castle, so you can tell just how dense the forest is when looking at it from the foot of the hill where it dwells.
