Thankful November 25th: Heat

Today is our first real snow storm here in Utah, and it’s supposed to last the entire week. Yay us. Sort of. Today, I am grateful for heat. Well-built fires, forced-air vents, a down-filled coat, a simple knit hat, a sun-heated beach. These are a few of my favorite things.

Thankful November 14th: Flowers

I love flowers. I love smelling flowers. I love looking at flowers. And I especially love photographing flowers. My maternal grandmother had the most amazing flower garden: roses, lilies, snapdragons, daisies. Each summer, her small yard was transformed by colors and scents that transported us to a fairy world.

Thankful November 10th: Family

I know that I’ve already mentioned my parents and my siblings in individual posts, but I have a lot more family. My husband’s family is very large (he is the youngest of eight kids). I have a wonderful group of aunts, uncles, and cousins. I inherited four wonderful children when I married my husband. And then there are people who aren’t blood relation, but are still family. Family is very important to me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I have been lucky enough to do a bit of traveling around this amazing planet on which we live (that sentence structure is a nod to all of my English professors at the University of Utah). I’ve been to Asia, Europe, Mexico, Great Britain, and most of the United States of America. Everywhere I go, I find beautiful things to photograph and wonderful people who fill my heart with happiness.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Open Topic

Sorry for the very late posting for this challenge, but it’s been one of those weeks. In fact, I’m cheating just a little. This week’s challenge is for you to pick any photo you choose, just please tell us why you chose that photo. This photo is one I took this last summer up at our family cabin. One of our daughters loves For-Get-Me-Nots. I knew that they grew near the cabin, so I went in search and found these lovely blooms. Very small and delicate, but worth the hunt.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Yellow

To me, yellow is the color of warmth. As children, we learn to make the sun in our drawings yellow. Fire is usually depicted with yellow flames. These small, delicate flowers were growing along the driveway of our family cabin, and even though very small, they were a wonderful burst of color and warmth. I’ve seen these flowers my whole life. We used to pick them and rub the small tuft against our skins, much like a yellow dandelion head. Small, yellow flowers will always remind me of the Utah mountains.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Neglected

My husband has some of the most fun job sites. One of our best clients (and a good friend of my husband) is building a small, forest get-away in the Uinta Mountains. He had some questions for his structural engineer, so of course we had to go for a visit. Along with taking pictures of the construction site, I had time to sit and take some more artistic shots, like this one of an old can of, wow, I’m not even sure what is in that can. The bristles of the brush were completely hardened, and you can no longer read the label.

For the curious, here are pictures of the cabin construction site and a view from the top of the mountain that is part of the property.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Girl Power

While it might seem a bit cliche, literally none of us would be here without women. All of our lives have been touched by women: mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, sisters. I was fortunately enough to take family photos for this wonderful group of women (and the men in their lives). What a great legacy.

Also, I could not do a challenge honoring women without including a photo of my own amazing mom. She is loving, supportive, intelligent, caring, and an amazing example of all that a woman can and should be. I love you, Mom.
