A Photo a Week Challenge: Off-Center

One of the cardinal rules of photography is to not place your main subject in the middle of your frame. It’s all part of that asymmetry stuff that you learned in high school art classes. If you’ve found a photo with a dead-centered subject that you love, but it doesn’t look quite right, try cropping it with your subject off-centered and see if you like it more. The beauty with digital is that you can try several different ways to see what looks the best and even ask family, friends, or perfect strangers which they like the most.

A Photo a Week Challenge: She’s Got The Look

My sister’s son asked me to take some professional photos for him. He has to put together a business website for his careers advancement class. It was a lot of fun. My sister’s home is a wonderful place to take photos. This great shot of her was taken in their living room (yes, they really do have some stone walls like this inside their home). My sister’s a blast to hang out with and to photograph. We were waiting for my nephew to change his shirt for the more formal headshots when I grabbed this one of my sister. I was testing lighting and focus, and she gave me this look. It really does say almost everything about her personality: fun, sarcastic, open. I love her dearly (though growing up, my parents might not have thought that was possible). I’m so glad that we have become such good friends as adults.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Feet

At the photo shoot for this adorable family, the mom asked me to take a photo of the bare feet of her three boys. This is how they spend the majority of their days, running around inside and out with no shoes on. The oldest boy even wore flip-flops for the shoot because he doesn’t like shoes.

I love watching my husband at work. He is so good at so many things, like splitting wood. We have to keep the cabin supplied with fresh cut wood, especially now that the temperatures are dropping and we we are lighting fires more and more. My camera has a great cluster shooting mode that I’ve used many times.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Hats Off

This little guy was so much fun to photograph. His mommy and daddy had wonderful ideas for his shoot. This little hat was for a doll, but it fit him perfectly. His great-grandpa wore a very similar hat, so it was perfect for him to wear it. When shooting portraits, accessories can be great. They also can be a huge distraction. It can take trial and error to figure out if something works or not. This hat worked.

Thankful November 10th: Family

I know that I’ve already mentioned my parents and my siblings in individual posts, but I have a lot more family. My husband’s family is very large (he is the youngest of eight kids). I have a wonderful group of aunts, uncles, and cousins. I inherited four wonderful children when I married my husband. And then there are people who aren’t blood relation, but are still family. Family is very important to me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thankful November 9th: Music

There has never been a time in my life that hasn’t included music. I grew up in a family of seven (including parents), and all of us played at least two instruments (including parents). My dad’s mother was a piano teacher. She taught me for 11 years, and she was my biggest supporter when I chose to study music in college. I play the piano, and violin. In college, I studied singing and choral conducting. I started teaching piano when I was 18, and I currently have 15 students who do two to three recitals a year. I met my husband because I was the music director for a show at a local community theater. The show we were doing was written by a friend who asked my younger sister and me to arrange the music. I have written a little original music, but I mostly do choir arrangements (makes sense, see previously mentioned college path). I love music. I don’t know what life would be like without music infusing pretty much every aspect of it.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Hands

I love photographing hands, especially family hands. The last time I did a hands challenge, this little family had just had their second child. Now they have three. Our hands tell stories about our lives now and what we’ve been through. I have several scars on my hands that tell of an active childhood. Do you bite your nails? Have you lost a finger (or two)? Do you live in a climate that is friendly or harsh on your hands? What stories do your hands tell?
