A Photo a Week Challenge: Reflective Surfaces
A visit to Chicago isn’t complete without seeing the Cloud Gate, nicknamed The Bean, at Millennium Park. Even though Boston, Massachusetts is technically bean town, Chicagoans are very proud of this amazing sculpture, created by Anish Kapoor. People crowd around the Cloud Gate to take selfies of their reflection. We also found the underside fascinating. This photo was taken looking up at the center from underneath the arch.
IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO OR TWO OF REFLECTIVE SURFACES.
Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.
Here’s how it works:
- Each week, I’ll come up with a theme and post a photo that I think fits. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Thursday, when the next photo theme will be announced.
- To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “A Photo a Week Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.
- Follow nancy merrill photography so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Signs
Sometimes signs tell us where to go. Sometimes they block our way. This particular sign was meant for cars, but with some imagination and good framing, it becomes more than just a direction for a driver. I hope this young man did not take the words of this sign to heart.
IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO OR TWO OF SIGNS, PHYSICAL OR METAPHORICAL.
Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Half and Half
Hmmm…two sky photos in the same week. I’m feeling a bit stuck.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Artsy
The digital medium for photography has really changed the availability of new and interesting ways to capture and process images. Twenty years ago (which for a lot of us feels more like ten), most people hadn’t heard of Photoshop (click here for a brief history of the evolution of Adobe® Photoshop®). Now, it’s the industry leader in photo editing software for professionals and amateurs, though by no means the only one.
For this image, I started with the black & white image below:
and decided to play with it a little and create a more artistic version of it. I used the sharpen tool to give it more of a gritty feel, and then added the filter Brush Stroke > Crosshatch.
Whether your artistic bent includes a head-long dive into software processing, dark room puttering, or letting the image speak for itself, it’s exciting to think of what we will be able to do with photography in the future as technology increases.
IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE PHOTOS THAT SHOW OFF YOUR ARTISTIC SIDE.
Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

A Photo a Week: Blurry
For this inaugural photo challenge, the topic is blurry. Have you ever taken a photo that turned out to be blurry and you were okay with it? Have you ever purposefully taken a blurry photo for the artistry of it? What about one where what you initially thought you wanted in focus wasn’t, but it made the shot more interesting?
I took this photo of my stepdaughter as she was walking ahead of me. I had on a narrow focal 50mm lens, and she was walking so fast that she was out of focus as soon as the camera focused and was ready to snap the picture. But I was okay with it because I like the effect.
Post your blurry shots and link them to this post. Then come back and share the link. I’m excited to see what everyone (or anyone) comes up with!
