A Photo a Week Challenge: Signs

When I was growing up, my family drove past the Salt Lake Costume Company several times a week as it was on the route to my grandmother’s home. With weekly piano lessons and every other week Sunday family dinners at her house, we were very familiar with the costume shop and its really cool neon sign with the knight and horse. When the shop finally closed for good about 15 years ago, the building fell into disrepair and neglect. About 6 years ago, a developer bought the property and repurposed it for apartments and retail. Our firm was lucky enough to work on the project, and I was so happy when they decided to save the neon sign.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Reflection

We had the opportunity to go on a business trip to Bullfrog, Utah. It sits at the northern end of Lake Powell in the Red Rock area of southern Utah. While my husband inspected the restaurant that will be renovated during their off-season this winter, I had fun taking pictures of lake and marina in the morning sunlight. This photo shows the lake and marina in a reflection from the restaurant picture windows.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Take a New Photo

Today was a bit of a banner day. My husband and I got our first dose of the Covid vaccine. Wahoo. Now I just have to get over the sore arm (and the possible symptoms in three weeks when we get our second dose). To celebrate, we hit one of our favorite burger places, Crown Burger. If you haven’t been to Utah and experienced crown burger, I highly suggest a visit just for the pastrami burger. Just for fun, and because food is a lot of fun to photograph, I grabbed a shot of our shared meal. The burger is big enough to share, and the onion rings are divine. The book is my current read, so I was able to get in a few pages while I waited for my husband to get to the restaurant (he had to visit a job site on the way back to the office from the shots, and the restaurant was nearby so I went ahead and ordered while he finished up his meeting).

A Photo a Week Challenge: Tower

I recently took a drive around to take pictures to update our company website (Realize Structural Engineering, Inc. — if you’d like to take a look or need some structural engineering work in Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, or Montana). This really cool tower is on the property of some apartment buildings. The property used to be a brick yard, and this tower is the only surviving structure from the original buildings. We were hired to ensure that they could save the tower and keep it structurally sound. As part of his inspection, my husband got to go up to the top of the tower and stand by the white light on the top. He loved it. It kind of reminds me of a lighthouse, and I love lighthouses. It’s pretty sad that I live in a very dry place. Anyway, I do also love this tower.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Footwear

I like wearing shoes, but I don’t like buying shoes and I don’t own a lot of them. When I find a style that I like and are comfortable, I will wear them until they wear out. Then, I’ll try to replace them with the exact same shoes. I love shoes for little kids. I think they are so cute, especially boots. Any style of boot for a little kid is just adorable. These boots belong to my great-niece. Her parents are building a new house, and these are the boots that she wears around the construction site.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Up In The Air

Sorry about no challenge last week. With COVID-19 raging throughout the world, things have been a bit crazy here. And then yesterday morning, Salt Lake City was hit with a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. Needless to say, this topic seemed to fit perfectly for the world situation right now.

Last week, I had the chance to visit this job site the day they were flying in the roof trusses. It was the first time I’ve had seen this, and it was a blast. The framers were amazing, climbing all over the frames to secure them once the crane lifted them up for placement. I picked this particular image because I loved how the sunbursts helped to frame it.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Three Angles

The rule of threes is widely known and used in art of all kinds, especially photography. Today, instead of using the rule of three in a single image, I’m asking you to show a single object from three different angles. My images are of a recently finished project that we had the privilege of working on. I think this building and parking structure are rather stunning. It was a really fun project to work on.

A Photo a Week: Work

I know I’ve posted about this before, but we own a structural engineering firm. We get to work on a lot of different types of structures: large office buildings, small office buildings, medium office buildings, retail spaces, multi-level parking structures, new custom homes, structural changes for tenants moving into spaces, remodels on any type of building. I get to travel around and take pictures of our job sites, and it is a blast. Recently, we helped one of our nephews and his family on the design of their new home. Their ground-breaking was on Tuesday. I went out to get pictures. Their digger was too late for me to be able to stay and get photos of the actual dig, but I did get some really cute pictures of them and their golden shovel.

Thankful November 12th: Work

Four years ago, my husband left the structural engineering firm he was working at so that we could open a firm of our own, Realize Structural Engineering, Inc. A year and half later, I left my full-time job as a technical writer to work part-time as our office manager and HR department. It’s been a crazy ride, but it has also been so worth it. These photos are some of our recent projects.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to build our own company with our own standards and mission statement.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Unexpected

I was taking photos at a man-made waterskiing lake (an interesting site visit for work) when I captured a fish giving me a little wave. Apparently the lake is also stocked with some descent-sized trout. It was a fun moment. I love it when I notice something unexpected in photos.
