A Photo a Week Challenge: Change of Seasons

Hello again! Sorry about the long break. My hip surgery went so well that the doctor wanted to fix my knee as soon as possible. I’m now four week past the knee replacement surgery, and it is also going very well. Whew! Hopefully no more surgeries for, well, forever if possible.

The fall colors this year along the Wasatch Front in Utah have been spectacular. We have some Virginia creeper in our yard that we only like for a few weeks a year when the leaves start changing from green to red. They are dramatic and beautiful, but not really worth the struggle of fighting it the rest of the year. However, I will take some really cool pictures of it until we can irradiate it from our yard.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Vibrant

Since we’ve returned from Mexico (and apparently the entire week we were gone), Utah has been experiencing heavier than usual rain. It’s cold. It’s dank. And it is very much needed as we’ve been in a sever draught for over a year. However, it does make taking pictures of pretty things difficult. So I’m going back a few months (to May) to bring you this week’s challenge. Each year, Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah has a tulip festival during April and May. We went with our daughter and grandsons this year, and these beautiful, vibrant tulips were waiting to greet us at the entrance. I couldn’t resist taking their picture.

A Photo a Week Challenge: The Road Not Taken

I love this road. I love this road in every season (even though I’ve only been here in winter a couple of times). This road is truly less traveled by, because our cabin is in a gated community in the Wasatch National Forest. Only cabin owners and forest rangers have keys to get in. While this summer was severely dry, we still got the amazing golden Quaking Aspens this fall, and I am so glad. They really make me wax Robert Frost when I’m wandering through these dirt roads under their golden canopy.

The Road Not Taken — Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

A Photo a Week Challenge: October

Fall is my favorite season of the year. I love wearing sweaters. I love the cooler weather. I love all of the holidays from October through New Years. In the northern hemisphere, October is the first real month of fall. The mountains in Utah turn the most beautiful colors. This year, I’ve really appreciated being able to escape the craziness of the pandemic and the U.S. election cycle by heading up into the mountains. Our latest trip was this last weekend, and the mountains and quaking aspens did not disappoint.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Rainbow

Utah has had a very dry July. As a desert, we do experience monsoons starting in late July through mid-August. However, this beautiful, full rainbow (with a hint of a double in the upper-left corner) came in early June during our last real storm before yesterday.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Water

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink. The recent weather in Utah has been a display of the bizarre. We have gone from record highs to snow. The snow pack has started its annual decent to the valley streams, rivers, and lakes. I had the opportunity to take this young man’s photos last weekend, and we went to Sugarhouse Park. I’m not sure which creek this is; it feeds into a large pond (almost lake) in the middle of the park. His mom told me that this is his favorite city park because of the creek and lake, so it seemed the best place to take photos in his first-ever, official grown-up suit. We had a great time taking fun photos, and he had a great time watching twigs and small branches float along the creek and observing the ducks in the water. A great time was had by all.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Opening

Last week, I asked you what changes you have made because of the pandemic. This week, our state went from orange alert to yellow, which means that all businesses can open again and restaurants can offer limited dine-in services (with all proper precautions). Our governor is also talking about some counties that have had little to no impact from the virus might be back to green (all clear and normal) by the end of the month. This is good news. The shutdown was initially only supposed to help hospitals prepare and be ready for an increase of patients. I’m not sure when it went to “we can’t open anything until we have a cure”. We don’t have a cure for the Spanish Flu from 1918-19. Why do we think we will find a cure for this virus? Sorry about the rant. I just worry about economies and isolated people who are at risk with no outside contact. There has to be a balance.

So, in honor of some small signs of hope that this will eventually end, this week’s topic is opening. I know I post a lot of pictures of our rose garden. I’m not going to apologize. I love them. This particular rose starts as a variegated bud but once it is fully opened is a beautiful red.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Changing Seasons

Last night, I started a post for my normal Thursday challenge, and I just wasn’t feeling it. This morning, the sun was shining and some of our early spring flowers are blooming, and I changed my mind to this topic. With all of the uncertainty in the world right now, I’m so glad we can count on the earth understanding its role. The changing of the seasons tells us that things do move forward. Life goes on. We will get through this, we just have to be smart and patient.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Opposite Weather

Here in Utah, we are heading deep into winter. Cold temperatures, a lot of snow, overcast skies, and ugly inversions. While I do enjoy some snow, by the first week of January, I’m usually longing for the warmth of late spring and early summer (which is hilarious, because by the beginning of August, I’m longing for the cooler temps of fall and early winter). I took this picture in July 2019 at our family cabin on a beautiful July 4th day. *Sigh* Why do we almost always want what we don’t have at the moment? Humans are funny, funny creatures.
