A Photo a Week Challenge: Squirrel!

With the mountains so close, Salt Lake City has a lot of wildlife. Once, while waiting for a lightrail train to pass, a beautiful, four-point buck came bounding down the tracks ahead of the train. My sister is constantly battling to keep her plants and trees alive from all of the deer that make their way down to her yard during winter and early spring. Usually, chipmucks and potguts stay in the mountains, but we do get frequent squirrel sitings. This guy made his presence known during a wedding shoot at a popular photography site near downtown Salt Lake. He was so obliging to pose that I couldn’t resist taking his photo.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Unexpected

I was taking photos at a man-made waterskiing lake (an interesting site visit for work) when I captured a fish giving me a little wave. Apparently the lake is also stocked with some descent-sized trout. It was a fun moment. I love it when I notice something unexpected in photos.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Birds

One of Utah’s most prevalent bird species is the red-throated hummingbird. You can find these light-weight beauties throughout the mountains in northern Utah and backyards across the Salt Lake Valley. Many people put up feeders, like this one, to attract the little flyers. This photo was taken at a campground 11 miles up Logan Canyon. We saw closs to 30 birds, and as we watched them, the level of the sugar water in the feeder dropped at least an inch.

Cee’s Black & White Challenge: Things That Fly

Swans are ubiquitous in Switzerland and southern Germany. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are both named for the beautiful birds. Although they can fly, swans are more well-known for their beauty and grace in the water. The first picture is at Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. The fountain is at Hohenschwangau in Germany.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Rare

Though sighting lizards in the Escalante/Horse Canyon area of Utah is not rare, it is rare to have one sit still long enough for you to grab a good shot of them unless you are willing to stay in one place for a long time. We didn’t have that luxury, so we’re very happy this guy didn’t find us too scary to pose.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Wildlife

Little lizzard

Living so close to the Rocky Mountains and several national parks and monuments, we see wildlife all the time. With the diverse landscape (from pine-filled forests to red rock deserts), we see everything from deer to lizards, bear to cougars (though you really don’t want to meet the last two face-to-face). This little fellow — he’s only about two inches long — was scrambling along the rocks looking for some shade, and probably a place to hide from my lens.
