A Photo a Week Challenge: Black & White

pw_bw_nmp

Looking back through past challenges, I found that I have never done a dedicated black and white challenge. It really surprised me. I love editing in black and white. When I was still shooting with film, I loved using black and white dedicated film, especially for slides. There’s something amazing about black and white images. They are instantly nostalgic and artistic.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO OR TWO (OR MORE).

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Each week, I’ll come up with a theme and post a photo that I think fits. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Thursday, when the next photo theme will be announced.
  2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “A Photo a Week Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.
  3. Come back here and post a link to your image in the comments for this challenge.
  4. Follow nancy merrill photography so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements.

Thursday Doors – March 30, 2017

It is tradition for couples who marry in the LDS Salt Lake Temple to take pictures at the large, ornate doors outside the temple after the ceremony. Part of that tradition is taking a picture of the couples’ hands together on one of the doorknobs.

Post-processing can be so much fun. You can do so many different things with a single image. I was recently playing around with some HDR actions in Photoshop on an image of the Payson Utah LDS Temple. The differences between the the photos was stunning and amazing. The first image is the original with only basic RAW conversion tweaks. The second and third are using some actions I found on InkyDeals. They are fun and very dramatic. Let me know which you like the best out of the three.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A SERIES OF A SINGLE PHOTO WITH DIFFERENT TREATMENTS.

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Hands

hands_nmp

I love photographing hands, especially family hands. This little sweetie was two days old when we captured this image. Our hands tell stories about our lives now and what we’ve been through. I have several scars on my hands that tell of an active childhood. Do you bite your nails? Have you lost a finger (or two)? Do you live in a climate that is friendly or harsh on your hands? What stories do your hands tell?

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A SERIES OF PHOTOS THAT FEATURE HANDS.

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Edible

Anyone who knows me well knows my love of fresh fruit, especially berries. Actually, I’m a great lover of food. I think there’s a good chance that without food, I would die. Literally. Food has been the subject of art for centuries. Young art students and grand masters alike have painted and sketched thousands of still lifes of bowls upon bowls of fruit. Photographers are no different. We carefully place each tasty item, make sure the lighting is decent, and snap away. Food is life, in health bodies and in art.

Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Cee’s Black & White Challenge: Perspective

During a newborn shoot, the big brother fell asleep and we couldn’t resist taking some pictures of them sleeping side-by-side. This bottom shot was irresistible.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Red

red_nmp

It’s another color challenge! We love color challenges. I do love color challenges, because they allow a lot more freedom. Red has become one of my favorite colors. My closet is full of various shades of reds. I think it’s because red goes so well with my first favorite color, green. When photographing red, it can be tricky to make sure the color doesn’t take over too much. It can also shade the rest of the image, depending on the lighting. Good luck, photogbugs! Have fun with the color red.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A SERIES OF PHOTOS THAT FEATURE THE COLOR RED.
